Look, it's pretty much written in stone: lots and lots of people can't
wait to get their hands on the SSIA loot and blow it on current
consumption. Hell, even Governments do the same thing with tax
windfalls so we shouldn't be too surprised! I know it doesn't matter a
whit that some clown in the media, or on the radio, or in a book like
LOOT! is urging continued investment: the spending boom is still going
to happen. It's inevitable. Why do you think car sales rooms the length
and breadth of the country are getting makeovers and why new car sales
as early as January 2006 have gone through the roof!
Nonetheless, the fact that you've gone to the trouble of buying and
reading LOOT! means you're not totally convinced by the spendies and
are searching for arguments to present to your nearest and dearest to
avoid blowing the pot, tempting though that is. But one way or another
the spend, spend, spend agenda will arise, so we'll look at the most
seductive options and you can decide if it's going to be indulgence or
celibacy.
For those thinking of spending the SSIA pot the first question to ask
yourself is: do you need the money over the long-term? If you are
already buying assets at the proper rate, or you have already
accumulated sufficient assets that make you financially independent,
then go ahead and blow the money. Enjoy it! Take the world cruise, buy
art, jewellery and the best home movie system around whatever makes you
happy.
If, on the other hand, you will need the money later in life, think
very carefully before you spend a cent of it because this could be the
last-chance saloon to add something valuable to your State pension.
Remember, you have a number of options to make the money work in the
long term and you have already acquired the savings habit, so it
shouldn't be too painful to stick with it.
So, what are the temptations?
